9 Ball Pool Rules & Mechanics
9 ball pool (also written nine ball or nineball) is a rotation pool game played with nine object balls numbered 1 to 9 plus the cue ball. On every shot the cue ball must contact the lowest-numbered ball on the table first, but balls do not need to be pocketed in numerical order.
- The opening break: the 1 ball sits at the apex of the diamond rack and the 9 ball in the centre.
- Legal contact: failing to strike the lowest-numbered ball first is a foul, giving your opponent ball-in-hand anywhere on the table.
- Winning the rack: the player who legally pockets the 9 ball at any point wins the game — there is no need to clear the table first.
How to Play
How to Play 9 Ball Pool — Beginner's Guide
Never played nine ball before? It is one of the easiest pool games to pick up. Here is the whole game in five steps.
- Break the rack: aim at the 1 ball at the head of the diamond and strike with power. Potting any ball on the break is legal.
- Always hit the lowest ball first: the cue ball must contact the lowest-numbered ball remaining on the table before anything else.
- Any pocket counts: you do not have to pot balls in order — so long as the lowest ball is contacted first, combinations and caroms are legal.
- Play safe when you cannot win: a foul hands your opponent ball-in-hand, so a well-judged safety often beats a low-percentage shot.
- Pot the 9 to win: sink the 9 ball legally, including by combination, and the rack is yours.

Which Pool Game Should You Play?
9 ball pool is the fastest of the three. Frames are short, the lowest ball must be hit first, and anyone can steal the rack by potting the 9 — so it rewards aggressive, creative shot-making.
8 ball (eightball) is the classic pub and league game: fifteen balls split into solids and stripes, then a called 8 ball to finish. Slower, more tactical, and the most widely played pool game in the world.
Snooker is the most technical cue sport, played on a twelve-foot table where scoring, safety play and break building decide the match.
Not sure which to try? All three run on the same free Three.js engine, so you can jump between 9 ball, 8 ball and snooker without installing anything.

-
How do 9 ball pool rules work?
9 ball is a rotation game: on every shot the cue ball must contact the lowest-numbered ball remaining on the table first, but balls can be potted in any order. Pot the 9 ball legally and you win the game.
-
What is the difference between 9 ball and 8 ball?
8 ball splits fifteen balls into solids and stripes, so you must clear your group before potting the 8. 9 ball uses only nine balls, has no groups, only requires you to hit the lowest ball first, and ends the moment the 9 is potted — which makes it faster and more unpredictable.
-
Is 9 ball harder than 8 ball?
Different rather than simply harder. 9 ball punishes loose safety play and rewards precise cue-ball control and combination shots, and because any legally potted 9 ends the rack, runs of luck can decide games that 8 ball would not.
