8 Ball Pool Rules & Strategy

8 ball pool (also known as eightball) is a call-shot game played with a cue ball and 15 object balls numbered 1 to 15. One player takes solids (balls 1–7) and the other stripes (balls 9–15), and each must clear their group before potting the 8 ball to win.

  • Opening break: the 8 ball is racked in the centre of the triangle. The table stays open until a group is established by legally potting a ball after the break.
  • Legal shots: on every shot the cue ball must hit a ball from your assigned group first, and some ball must then hit a cushion or be pocketed.
  • Winning the rack: pot the 8 ball into a called pocket after clearing your group. Potting the 8 ball early, or on a foul, loses the rack.

How to Play 8 Ball Pool — Beginner's Guide

New to eightball? The whole game comes down to six steps.

  1. Break the rack: hit the head ball hard and try to spread the fifteen balls across the table.
  2. Claim a group: the table is open after the break, so the first ball you legally pot decides whether you shoot solids or stripes.
  3. Clear your group: pot all seven of your balls. Call your pocket on the 8 ball if you are playing call-shot rules.
  4. Keep the cue ball controlled: position — not power — wins 8 ball. Think one shot ahead and leave a simple next pot.
  5. Play safe when you cannot pot: hiding the cue ball behind a ball you cannot legally hit leaves your opponent snookered.
  6. Pot the 8 to win: once your group is cleared, put the 8 ball into the pocket you called without fouling.

Practise the shots you keep missing on the free pool practice table — drag balls into any layout and hit play.

Which Pool Game Should You Play?

8 ball pool is the classic pub and league game and the most widely played pool game in the world: fifteen balls split into solids and stripes, then a called 8 ball to finish. It is the most tactical of the three.

9 ball (nine ball) is faster. Only nine balls, no groups, and the lowest ball must be hit first — so frames are short and anyone can steal the rack by potting the 9.

Snooker is the most technical cue sport of all, played on a twelve-foot table where scoring, safety play and break building decide the match.

Not sure which to try? All three run on the same free Three.js engine, so you can jump between 8 ball, 9 ball and snooker without installing anything.
